I must admit, I have always been a milk fan.  When my mother had to fuss to get my sisters to drink their milk, I would have gladly have finished there's and mine too. Today, my family enjoys drinking milk just not quite as much as I did and still do.  The kids only like to have milk in the cereal of to have chocolate milk if it's to drink.  So I was very happy when I was offered the chance to review and sample Horizon Organic Chocolate Milk. Over there years there have been numerous reports about the growth hormones in regular milk, so I was really happy to see that this is an organic product that takes care of that concern for me.

The kids love the flavor of the Horizon Organic Chocolate milk. It doesn't have the same flavor as most chocolate milks, which I can only describe as somewhat chalky.  This has a very smooth and sweet flavor, but not overly sweet.   Just take a look at the panel for Ingredients and Nutrition Facts:

Ingredients: Organic Grade A Lowfat Milk, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Cocoa, Organic Vanilla Flavor, DHA Algal Oil, Carrageenan, Salt, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin D3.

It's also great because the milk also comes in boxes with their own straws that can be packed in the kids lunch box/bag. It also doesn't hurt that it is low fat and tastes great.

Horizon Organic® Lowfat Chocolate Milk Plus DHA Omega-3 provides a great-tasting and easy way to add calcium and DHA to your family’s diet. DHA Omega-3 is an important nutrient that helps support heart, brain and eye health. Available in lowfat half gallons and quarts.

In addition to the great taste, DHA Omega-3 is a natural building block that supports brain development and function throughout life. It’s good for the whole family, but is especially valuable for young children to support their rapid growth.

DHA belongs to a category of healthy fatty acids known as Omega-3's. Found in high concentrations in the tissues of the brain and eye, DHA Omega-3 is thought to help support healthy function in these areas. DHA has also been shown to help support heart health.

• DHA provides a nutritional boost for children's growing minds and bodies. Children's brains grow incredibly fast. In fact, the brain nearly quadruples in the first five years of life.

• DHA is a key structural component of the brain, yet many young children don't get their recommended DHA from common dietary sources like fish

Horizon Organic® Milk Plus DHA Omega-3 is fortified with a natural, 100 percent vegetarian and sustainable source of DHA - a safe, wholesome, delicious way to bring more of this important nutrient into your family's diet.

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread

Yield: 1 loaf, 10 slices Prep time: 25 minutes Baking time: 65-75 minutes Difficulty Level: Easy - Moderate

Ingredients

Bread: • 1 3/4 cups unbleached flour (you may substitute up to 3/4 cup whole wheat flour) • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg • 1/4 teaspoon ginger • 1/4 teaspoon cloves • 1/2 cup Horizon Organic® unsalted butter • 3/4 cup sugar • 2 large Horizon Organic eggs • 1 cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) • 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips Glaze: • 1/2 cup powdered sugar • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon • 1-2 tablespoons Horizon Organic milk

Method

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour one 9x5-inch loaf pan. In a medium bowl, sift together flour, soda, salt and spices. Set aside. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until well combined. Add flour mixture alternately with pumpkin, mixing well between each addition. Stir in chocolate chips. Spread batter into prepared pan and bake for 65-75 minutes, until loaf feels firm and springy when pressed in the center and a tester inserted comes out clean (except for melted
chocolate chips). Cool in pan for 15 minutes then remove from pan and cool on a wire rack. To prepare glaze, sift powdered sugar with nutmeg and cinnamon in a small bowl. Add milk until mixture is thin enough to drizzle. Pour glaze over cool bread. Bread will keep well wrapped at room temperature for two days, in the refrigerator for five days, or in the freezer for up to four months.

Looking at the picture above, would you know with this little lovely is?   Most probably wouldn't.  It is a wonderful little timer that can be used differently than most timers we are used to.  Kathleen Whitehurst, CEO and founder of double u products, originally designed the DaysAgo to help busy moms keep the food in refrigerators safe for their families. The DaysAgo™ was invented by two friends, Kathleen Whitehurst and Debbie Stephens Stauffer, who were inspired by a desire to keep the food in their own refrigerators safe for their families. Their company, double u products, inc., is based in the city of Saint Helena in California’s Napa Valley. To find more information or to learn about purchasing DaysAgo, visit www.howmanydaysago.com.

The DaysAgo is the winner of a Good Housekeeping “Good Buy Award,” the DaysAgo is the first digital day counter to answer the age-old question, “How many days ago did I open this?” The gadget has a digital screen that starts counting with just the touch of a button. By counting up days, the DaysAgo can help determine when food has been opened and needs to be used, or can track days between household chores -- from taking care of plants to giving family members their medications.

The DaysAgo is available with a number of attachment options, including; magnet to adhere to metal objects; a suction cup for those items that are not metal or are oddly shaped; or with two different sizes of bands.  The large band can wrap around bigger items such as a bag of coffee beans or a carton or bottle of milk, which often needs to be consumed in seven to 10 days of being opened. The small band fits perfectly around such items as baby bottles, juice boxes, bottles of olive oil or wine, and medication.

In addition to offering families this unique household gadget, DaysAgo co-inventor Kathleen Whitehurst also offers a special Pink edition of the counter. A 10-year breast cancer survivor, Whitehurst is committed to supporting breast cancer awareness – and to encouraging women of all ages to get into the habit of doing regular self breast exams. The Pink DaysAgo comes with the suction so that women can put it on their vanity or bathroom mirrors and keep track of when it is time for their monthly self exams.
Whitehurst has partnered with Breast Cancer Network of Strength as part of her effort to promote early detection and self breast exams. Her company will be donating 10 percent of all sales from the Pink DaysAgo to provide emotional support to all those touched by breast cancer.

This wonderful line of digital day counters range in price from, $5 to $8 and may be purchased on the siteI received the magnetic two pack of this little ingenious product in orange and blue and couldn't wait to put it to use. My husband really has a terrible habit about putting things in the fridge and forgetting them. Then when I mention it to him, he always says that it hasn't been there that long. This little gem has helped put an end to that age old disagreement and made the “what is this in the refrigerator” conversation almost non-existent. I really love this product and plan to pick up more, because two just aren't enough.

I’m sure you will feel the same after you begin to use these day counters.  And, just so I can find out if you will be craving more of these like I am, the wonderful creators of this product have offered to give away three two packs of the magnetic timers to three lucky readers.

I love that time in the evening when everything has settled down and it's nearing bedtime.  This is my me time, and the time of day when I get to catch up on my favorite daily show, The View.  The ladies where all over the Tiger Woods news conference and what he had to say.  I really didn't feel the remorse that some people say they got from him apology.  However, my two favorites of the hot topics today that really set me off was that Toyota was aware of the problems with their vehicles much earlier than when they finally decided to issue the recall.  Big Money seems to win out again.  My other favorite topic today was finding out what the new credit cards rules that went into effect today would mean to me as a consumer.  I must admit I rarely use my cards, and when I do, I try to pay them off at the end of the month. But, with all the new rules in place, I'm sure it wil take a couple months to begin to feel just how creditors wil be sticking it to us.

Tomorrow on The View, the cast of Jersey Shore will be there dishing with the ladies.  I really can't wait for this episode.  This show was one of my guilty pleasures when it was on and I just couldn't get enough of these kids.  Some of the things they would do and say really made me think about what I would do if I were their parents.  It will be interesting to see how the fame has affected them.

And, as if we haven't heard enough about Nadya Suleman, she will be on the show Wednesday chatting it up with the hosts.  This should really be interesting, since all of the ladies had some very strong opinions when she was all over the media with the birth of her eight children.  I'm sure things will be heated as usual.  If you get a chance you should check out The View.  There is sure to be something you will love or hate about something that is discussed.  If you're not sure where to find The View, it airs Monday through Friday on ABC, you can also catch the daily episodes online at ABC.com

***“I am a participant in a Mom Central campaign for ABC Daytime and will receive a tote bag or other The View branded items to facilitate my review but all opinions in this post and all others posts are always my own.”

I'm not sure if you remember, but last week I told you that I had been selected to host a viewing party for a new line of pens and pencils that Paper Mate was offering.  They also had a new commercial that was scheduled to air around the time the Olympics began and my guest and myself would have the chance to view it.  Well, for those of us on the West Coast the commercial seemed to get lost in delays of the Olympics and such.  We did however continue to party while waiting and also viewed the commercial online, since the link had been previously provided.  My pre-viewing party post has the video attached.

Each of my guest was eager to see what paper mate had come up with since this brand has been long trusted in the area of office/pen products.  I think the biggest WOW was about the biodegradable pencils that they had created.  I however was really stoked over the smooth writing color gel pens, which comes in eight different ink colors.  My favorite was the purple and the red, which I made sure to keep for myself, before dividing the others up for my guests goodie bags.

Each guest left with:  a Paper Mate Gel Pen, a Paper Mate Biodegradable Pen and Pencil with extra erasers and leads, a Paper Mate Silhouette Mechanical Pencil,  a Paper Mate Note Pad and a set of Paper Mate Recipe Cards.  They also received copies of some yummy recipes that were provided by Paper Mate to fill up those recipe cards.  As part of our festivities and to tie into the "green" theme, I provided organic appetizers that were enjoyed by all.  The drinks however, were not organic, just tasty.  We were also able to play games that tied in with the Olympics, which made everyone feel like they were a part of the Olympics.

The party also had a great heart theme which is part of the Paper Mate logo (double hearts).  There were heart cutouts and I served pomegranate martinis (heart healthy) and heart shaped sandwiches.  All in all, a great time was had by everyone and each of the new products were well received.  Several of my guest commented on how it made them feel like they were doing something good for the planet, by using the new pens and pencils.  Especially the biodegradable ones that can be tossed in with the compost, it's amazing to know that these are made from corn.  To learn more about this line of products, head over to Paper Mate  and take a look around.  You can also fan Paper Mate on facebook.  Paper Mate also offers a program where you can collect old pens and recycle them, while raising money for your charity. They also have a new design pen, but unfortunately these were not included in the kit.

*** As a member of Mom Select I was provided by Paper Mate with a party package including the items listed above.  These items were provided for the unbiased opinions of myself and my party guests. No other form of compensation was received.

Jack in the Box Secret Society of Cool People
My new Grilled Sandwiches are free on Tuesday, 2/23.
Hey,

So I’ve recently been into things that are grilled. Not like rappers’ teeth or anything. My new Grilled Sandwiches. There’s the Grilled Turkey, Bacon & Cheddar with roasted turkey, cheddar cheese and bacon, and the Grilled Deli Trio, with salami, sliced ham, roasted turkey, provolone cheese and pickles. Both served on grilled artisan bread.

I can’t decide which one I like better. I’d imagine that’d be like having to choose which of your fraternal twins you like better. Except in that case, one is usually evil.

But back to the sandwiches.

I’ve decided to give them away for FREE on Tuesday, February 23rd with the purchase of a large drink. One sandwich per person though. So choose wisely.

-Jack

Tuesday, February 23rd only. One offer per person. At participating restaurants. Not valid in Austin, Seattle, Boise, Twin Falls, Waco, Beaumont/Pt Arthur, Yakima, Lake Charles.

Today, the day after Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday), is Ash Wednesday.  For those who do not know what the significance of this day and the lenten season is all about, I have included some information that might help.

The First Day of Lent:
In the Roman Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, the season of preparation for the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. (In Eastern Rite Catholic churches, Lent begins two days earlier, on Clean Monday.)
While Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation, all Roman Catholics are encouraged to attend Mass on this day in order to mark the beginning of the Lenten season.
The Distribution of Ashes:
During Mass, the ashes which give Ash Wednesday its name are distributed. The ashes are made by burning the blessed palms that were distributed the previous year on Palm Sunday; many churches ask their parishioners to return any palms that they took home so that they can be burned.
After the priest blesses the ashes and sprinkles them with holy water, the faithful come forward to receive them. The priest dips his right thumb in the ashes and, making the Sign of the Cross on each person's forehead, says, "Remember, man, that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return" (or a variation on those words).
A Day of Repentance:
The distribution of ashes reminds us of our own mortality and calls us to repentance. In the early Church, Ash Wednesday was the day on which those who had sinned, and who wished to be readmitted to the Church, would begin their public penance. The ashes that we receive are a reminder of our own sinfulness, and many Catholics leave them on their foreheads all day as a sign of humility.
Fasting and Abstinence Are Required:
The Church emphasizes the penitential nature of Ash Wednesday by calling us to fast and abstain from meat. Catholics who are over the age of 18 and under the age of 60 are required to fast, which means that they can eat only one complete meal and two smaller ones during the day, with no food in between. Catholics who are over the age of 14 are required to refrain from eating any meat, or any food made with meat, on Ash Wednesday.
Taking Stock of Our Spiritual Life:
This fasting and abstinence is not simply a form of penance, however; it is also a call for us to take stock of our spiritual lives. As Lent begins, we should set out specific spiritual goals we would like to reach before Easter and decide how we will pursue them—for instance, by going to daily Mass when we can and receiving the Sacrament of Confession more often.
What Fasting Is:
Fasting, broadly speaking, is the voluntary avoidance of something that is good. When Catholics talk about fasting, we normally mean restricting the food that we eat. We can fast between meals, by not eating snacks, or we can engage in a complete fast by abstaining from all food. The English word breakfast, in fact, means the meal that breaks the fast.
While fasting takes the form of refraining from eating, it is primarily a spiritual discipline designed to tame the body so that we can concentrate on higher things.
Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving - The Swiss Army Knife of the Spirit:
That is why fasting is usually mentioned along with prayer and almsgiving (or charity). By controlling the passions of the body, we free our souls for prayer. And by refraining from eating, we free up food or money that we can give to those less fortunate than ourselves. The three spiritual disciplines go hand in hand, and the Church calls us to practice all three together, especially during the season of Lent.
Lenten Fasting and Penance:
Lent, the 40 days before Easter Sunday, is a season of the Church calendar set aside for Christians to do penance in preparation for the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Refraining from food can help us to bring our bodies under the control of our souls, but it is also a way of doing penance for past excesses. That is why the Church strongly recommends that Catholics fast during Lent.
Current Church Law Regarding Fasting:
The Church used to prescribe very rigorous rules for the Lenten fast (including abstaining from all meat and eating only one meal per day). The current rules, however, are much more lax. Catholics are only required to fast on Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, and on Good Friday, the day that Jesus Christ was crucified. Anyone over the age of 18, but under the age of 60, should eat only one full meal on those days, although they can also have small amounts of food in the morning and the evening.

I have always been a fruit snack fan.  I think I like these more than the kids do.  They have authentic fruit flavors, not a processed taste and you also get in some vitamins when eating this.  So, I was very excited when Betty Crocker and My Bog Spark offered to provide me with two boxes of Betty Crocker Fruit Flavored Snacks and make a $25 donation to One Laptop per Child on my behalf.

Sometimes its difficult to have the opportunity, time, money or resources to donate to charity, but with this awesome program that Betty Crocker has started, it will make it a little bit easier. This is also a great way to teach the kids about giving to others and donating to a cause for those less fortunate.

With the purchase of specially marked boxes of kid favorites – including Fruit Roll-Ups, Gushers, Fruit by the Foot, and Stickerz & Shapes, your child could win one laptop to keep and Betty Crocker Fruit Flavored Snacks will donate another to a child in Africa. That's so a win, win. Take a look at this video to see the great work One Laptop per Child is doing in Africa.

Each day from now through May 30, 2010, one laptop prize will be awarded to a U.S. winner. For every laptop won, one laptop will be donated to an African child through One Laptop per Child, an organization that creates educational opportunities for the world’s poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning. For your chance to win, simply enter the unique online code printed on participating Betty Crocker Fruit Flavored Snack packages on www.WinOneGiveOne.com.

Betty Crocker has also decided to be generous to one lucky reader as well. I was offered an additional two boxes and another $25 donation for me to give away to one of  my readers. Even if you don't like the fruit snacks as much as I do, the kiddies are sure to enjoy them.

Giveaway Rules – Each entry must include your name and email. A comment should be left for each entry. You must complete the mandatory entries to be eligible for the optional entries. This giveaway will end at 10 pm pst on 3/6/10. The winner will be chosen using Random.org from all valid entries and notified via email. Winner will have 48 hours to contact me before another winner is chosen. Giveaway is open to U.S. residents only, no p.o. boxes. I don't know if you remember me posting about having the opportunity to become a "The View" brand ambassador, but I was really excited then and am even more excited today.  I have been selected as a brand ambassador for ABC’s talk show, The View. As, I said in my previous post, hopefully this will get me a little closer to seeing the show in person.
Right now, there is a sweepstakes going on sponsored by Mom Central and The View that may also get you a little closer to seeing the view in person as well. You could win a trip to New York City to watch a taping of The View! The sweepstakes is open until February 28th. So head on over to enter!  If you have a chance, give it a shot.  Who knows, maybe they will see how excited people are about attending a live taping and offer more than one trip.

I'm not sure if you remember my previous post regarding Shushybye or not, but I was given the opportunity to attend their Holiday Extravaganza stage presentation back in December.  Take a look at the review and see my take on it.  So, when the wonderful Shushybye people offered me the chance to review their book Shushybye Sleepover Surprise and the music CD, Close your Eyes I eagerly jumped at the chance.  My toddler niece and nephew have both fallen in love with the characters.

Shushybye is The Original Dream-Themed World Of Fun, Learning And Imagination For Babies, Toddlers And Preschoolers.  It is a preschool entertainment and lifestyle brand designed to inspire children to look forward to sleep time and help parents prepare their children for sleep in a fun and loving way that encourages imagination. Importantly, SHUSHYBYE helps create healthful sleep habits for toddlers and preschoolers.

Shushybye Sleepover Surprise

This is a book/audio ReadAlong/Sing Along CD that can be shared with parents and children. When the cover of the book is put under a light it becomes glow in the dark, which the kids seem to think is the neatest thing around.  The read along/sing along CD includes three great songs: Shushybye Theme Song, Shushybye Blues and The Shushybye Lullaby, all which will help your child relax into sleepy-time.

The book is a quick read, with amazing vivid colors and graphics that makes the sky the prettiest shade of blue.  The colors are not overly stimulating to the child, so if you share the images with them it won't be anything that would over-stimulate their little systems.

Close your Eyes, CD

Shushybye land also has it's own band, they're are called The Shushybye Dream Band.  Now this band doesn't sing your typical lullabies.  This music CD features such awesome Shushy hits as Feels Like Magic, It's A Shushy Day, The Snort and Wheez Theme Song, Send Your Dream Wish, It's Evening, The Shushybye Blues, Shushybye Boogie Tonight, Pillow Park Rock, Beyond the Stars and Past the Moon and Who's Makin' Dreams.  This is the eagerly awaited second Shushybye Dream Band music CD. Their first CD entitled, The Shushybye Dream Band: Shushybye and Goodnight was a huge success, and their second will surely be the same based on my opinion.

If you have a chance you should stop by the Shushybye website and take a look around.  They offer a great selection of books, sleepwear, music compact discs and other fun items.  They also provide information regarding all of their upcoming performance dates and locations.  If you have the chance to see a stage presentation you really should take your little ones to see it.  They will be in awe.

So, as if the Shushybye family hasn't been generous enough already, they are also offering one lucky reader the chance to win the Shsushybye Sleepover Surprise book and the Close your Eyes, CD. If you have a young one this book and CD will be a welcomed addition for both parent and child.

Have you heard about Mom Select?  It's a wonderful site where mom's and mom bloggers can sign up to have their opinions heard and help influence the products we use.  Once you sign up, you will begin to receive emails, based on your profile, for various events and or products to sample.  I was recently selected to host a Paper Mate Viewing Party tomorrow night, for a new line of Paper Mate pens and pencils.  The viewiing party will also allow me to introduce some friends to the new commercial that will air tomorrow on various channels at about 7:30 pm est.  But, for those of you who will not be able to see it tomorrow, you can take a look at it here.  I plan to have another post after the party to let you know how the new line was received by my guest.   Enjoy!
